Physical Education and School Sport Policy

 

Rationale

Physical Education (PE) should contribute to the overall education of young people by helping them to lead full and valuable lives through engaging in purposeful physical activity.  We believe that Physical Education and school sport experienced in a safe and supportive environment makes a vital and unique contribution to a pupil’s physical and emotional health, development and wellbeing.

 

Aims and objectives

The aims and objectives of learning Physical Education in school are to:

  • teach pupils, through experience, to know about and value the benefits of participation in physical activity while at school and throughout life
  • develop physical competence and help to promote physical development
  • encourage an appreciation of skilful and creative performances across the areas of activity, by taking part in differentiated activities that appropriately challenge high-attaining pupils, whilst ensuring that pupils at all ability levels experience success and enjoyment, and make progress in relation to their own prior attainment
  • improve their capacity to address challenges and solve problems in PE
  • promote interpersonal skills when in collaboration on group tasks, as well as instilling the necessity to take part fairly and honestly in games, with due regard to rules and the key values of play
  • encourage all pupils to engage in safe and healthy competition against their peers, other local schools, and themselves
  • ensure that all pupils have access to participate in at least two hours of high quality curriculum PE, as well as additional extracurricular sporting opportunities
  • encourage all pupils to take part in at least 60 minutes of active physical activity each day
  • ensure that all KS2 children have the opportunity to develop their confidence and competence when swimming.

 

Differentiation for SEN, EAL and Able Children

All children are taught PE, whatever their ability. PE forms part of the school curriculum policy to provide a broad and balanced education to all children. Through our PE teaching we provide learning opportunities that enable all pupils to make progress. We do this by setting suitable learning challenges and responding to each child’s different needs. Assessment against the National Curriculum allows us to consider each child’s attainment and progress against end of year expectations.

 

Monitoring and assessment

Teachers assess children’s work in PE by making assessments as they observe them working during lessons. They record the progress made by children against the learning objectives for their lessons. At the end of a unit of work, teachers make a judgement as to whether the child has met, exceeded or is working towards the expectations of each individual unit. This information is recorded and used to plan the future work of each child. These records also enable the teacher to make an annual assessment of progress for each child, as part of the child’s annual report to parents. The teacher passes this information on to the next teacher at the end of each year.

 

Resource Management

There is a wide range of resources to support the teaching of PE across the school. We keep most of our equipment in the outside PE shed, which is easily accessible to the children. The PE cupboard in the hall also contains a range of large apparatus and equipment and we expect the children to help set up and put away this equipment as part of their work. By so doing, the children learn to handle equipment safely. The children use the school playground and field for games and athletics activities and the local swimming pool for swimming lessons.

 

Health and Safety

The general teaching requirement for health and safety applies in this subject. We encourage the children to consider their own safety and the safety of others at all times.

  • To eliminate potential hazards and risks, obstacles will be removed where appropriate, the floor and work area and equipment used will be checked for faults and damage. All faults and damage will be reported initially to the PE Leader, then the Headteacher.
  • Pupils will be taught safe ways to lift and carry equipment. Equipment used will reflect the age and ability of the pupils. Equipment will be stored safely in a PE store/cupboard, and will be replaced safely after use. Audio equipment will be turned off.
  • Pupils will be supervised at all times, and will be encouraged to work in a positive, disciplined manner. They will not be allowed onto apparatus until it has been checked by the teacher. Pupils will understand and respond to the ‘stop’ signal.
  • Mats will be only be used for jumping/balancing/rolling on and will not be used as a safety precaution in case a pupil falls from apparatus.
  • For outside lessons apparatus will be assembled in a safe suitable place for access, boundaries will be marked, and all striking/hitting will be away from buildings.

 

Dress Policy

  • Teachers are expected to set a good example by wearing appropriate clothing when teaching PE. All teachers have their own Tower Hill PE polo shirt which they wear in all PE lessons.
  • Pupils are expected to wear a white t-shirt and dark coloured shorts or jogging bottoms for PE lessons.
  • When the lesson is indoors pupils will wear their PE kit with bare feet at all times. When the lesson is outside pupils will wear their PE kit and trainers or plimsolls.
  • Football tops, and other fashion clothing items are not acceptable PE kit.
  • Long hair will be fastened back and jewellery and personal effects will be removed. If a child forgets their PE kit they will be given the opportunity to borrow clothing, or will be fully involved in the lesson in an alternative capacity.
  • Pupils with pierced ears will be expected to remove earrings before taking part in physical activity.

 

Out of hours provision:

  • All pupils are provided with opportunities to be physically active through out-of- hours activities by offering a range of activities at lunchtimes and at the end of the school day.
  • Physical activity is promoted during breaks and lunchtimes, by school Sports Leaders, and pupils are encouraged to be active at these times.
  • Pupils are provided with opportunities to represent the school through organised competitions and intra-school events.

 

The Role of the PE Leader

  • Take the lead in policy development and monitor schemes of work designed to ensure progression and continuity throughout the school.               
  • To help support and guide other staff members in their teaching and assessment of PE.
  •  Monitor the progress of all pupils in PE, particularly those considered to be highly attaining and those who are less engaged in PE.
  • Take responsibility for the purchase and organisation of resources for PE.
  • Keep up to date with local and national developments in PE and disseminate information to colleagues as appropriate.
  • Liaise with and co-ordinate provision of specialist coaches within and beyond the taught curriculum and make links with local sport clubs and coaches.

 

Out of school events

  • When using an alternative venue or site written permission will be gained from parents/guardians, a first aid box will be available, and an itinerary of the event will be left with the school.
  • Emergency contacts will be taken, rules and regulations for the site will be adhered to, and LA guidelines for staff/pupil ratios followed.
