A Girl Called Owl by Amy Wilson
It's bad enough having a mum dippy enough to name you Owl, but when you've got a dad you've never met, a best friend who needs you more than ever, and a new boy at school giving you weird looks, there's not a lot of room for much else.
So when Owl starts seeing strange frost patterns on her skin, she's tempted to just burrow down under the duvet and forget all about it. Could her strange new powers be linked to her mysterious father? And what will happen when she enters the magical world of winter for the first time?
A glittering story of frost and friendship, with writing full of magic and heart, A Girl Called Owl is a stunning debut about family, responsibility and the beauty of the natural world.
Mrs Ward says:
A great read! I really enjoyed this book told from the viewpoint of Owl – a girl who hasn’t met her Father until one day her skin begins to turn frosty and she wonders why. After speaking to her Mum, she finds out that the wonderful bedtime stories she had heard were not just stories but real life events all about her Father and the magical world he comes from. An amazing book, where the real world and the world of Mother Nature collide. I couldn’t help but think how exciting it would be to enter this magical world and find out what life would be like to be able to create the frost patterns of winter.
My Hamster is a Spy by Dave Lowe
A spate of burglaries has hit the neighbourhood, and the Jinks household hasn't been spared. With only a baby monitor, some drawing pins and a penguin-suit to hand, Stinky and Ben put together a plan to catch the criminals. But how will they cope when their scheme starts to unravel?
Mrs Ward says:
A talking Hamster – I’d never met one of those before I read this book! Stinky is a hamster who can talk and who particularly enjoys watching TV with his owner, Ben. When Ben and his family are out, Stinky witnesses a burglary and decides that he can help to catch the criminals. I really enjoyed reading about the antics of Ben and Stinky and finding out how they would catch the robbers. If you like a funny, action story, you will love this.
