Phonics at Tower Hill

The government strongly recommend the use of synthetic phonics when teaching early literacy skills to children. Synthetic phonics is simply the ability to convert a letter or letter group into sounds that are then blended together into a word.  At Tower Hill Primary School, we have adopted the Read Write Inc. programme to give children the best possible start to their learning in Literacy.  This programme is designed to stimulate and challenge children’s thinking and create enthusiastic, life-long readers and writers. All staff at Tower Hill (teachers and assistants) have received intensive training from a Read Write Inc. trainer.

During Read Write Inc. sessions children will learn the 44 common sounds in the English language and how to blend these for reading and writing.  Read Write Inc. begins in Reception and finishes when children have completed all levels on the programme.  The majority of our children will come ‘off the programme’ in the Spring Term of Year 2, though some will complete at the end of Year 1 and some may require further Read Write Inc. intervention in Key Stage 2.

The children in Early Years and Key Stage 1 are taught Read Write Inc. each day and are grouped according to their reading level. Children are assessed on a half termly basis to ensure that progress is being made and they are working at the correct level. Having set groups allows for children to be taught at a level which challenges them and moves them quickly through the levels.

We are a “Get Reading. Keep Reading. Change Everything.” school.

We use the highly successful Read Write Inc. Phonics programme to teach our children to read, write and spell. Our children do well in the phonics screening check and by Year 2, the majority are fluent readers with the best chance of success in the KS1 tests.

Ruth Miskin Training recognise us for teaching the programme with fidelity and passion – we know what it takes to make reading and writing pleasurable and rewarding for our children.

This badge recognises that we:
  • Raise standards in reading and writing for our children
  • Are all expertly trained by Ruth Miskin Training – including our headteacher Mrs Tansley.
  • Gain the latest programme updates through regular visits from our Ruth Miskin trainer
  • Support our most vulnerable readers with extra one-to-one teaching every day.
