The Tower Hill Progression Frameworks have been designed to enable teachers to plan, assess and track pupil progress in English and Mathematics against the new National Curriculum across Years 1 to 6. In the absence of National Curriculum levels, the Frameworks have been developed to help ensure that as many pupils as possible reach or exceed what is expected of them by the end of each year and key stage. These Progression Frameworks include a set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Reading, Writing and Mathematics for each year group. In the Progression Frameworks for English and Mathematics, the Progression Statements to which the KPIs relate are shown in bold.
At Tower Hill, progression is at the heart of effective teaching. A key skill for all teachers is knowing ‘what comes next’ in the learning journey that pupils are undertaking. This informs the questions that pupils are asked, the lessons that are planned and the feedback that is provided. The Frameworks can also be used as a basis to identify where interventions and targeted support are required for learners not on track to make the expected progress for that year. Some pupils will exceed those expectations and teaching will then provide them with additional challenges and opportunities. This does not necessarily mean going into the next year’s work; it may be more appropriate to enrich and deepen the grasp of the concepts associated with the current year. Fundamental to the new National Curriculum is the concept of developing a deep and secure understanding of the key areas of content and application of key skills.
